Orientation Day! Little nervous this morning when the
mysterious looking van pulled up to our house. Little did I know I was about to
meet Carlo, our spunky/90s pop loving driver. He drove us to a day care that
some of the volunteers will be working at. We were placed in a room while we
waited for Carlo to make trips back and forth to transport all 32 volunteers to
the daycare. While mingling with the other volunteers Ryan and I met many other
volunteers from all over the world! (Colombia, France, Canada, England,
Mexico…and more) The ages of volunteers probably ranged from 18-40, while the
majority were still in there early 20s it was still interesting to hear
people’s travel stories and see what brought them to Africa.
After a lot of discussion regarding rules and logistics of
the programs, we were brought to one of the elementary schools that volunteers
will be placed at. We got a quick tour of the school to get a feel of the type
of recourses we had. There was no running water, very little books/resources,
not computers….yet nearly every student was happy and thrilled to met us. They
jumped on our back, gave us high fives, and asked us about Justin Bieber. It
was heart warming to see these students so excited meet us.
We then were transported to Cape Town where Dreams to
Reality (the organization we are volunteering through) provided a wonderful
Mexican lunch. All 32 volunteers got to know each other better and plan out the
rest of our time together in Cape Town. We finished the afternoon with a walk
through Green Market Square! This is a must see in Cape Town! Shops and small
vendors everywhere!! Extremely unique authentic African gifts…everything from
bracelets and so paintings, to beautiful sculptures! We had a lot of fun
roaming through the markets!
