As a child we are trained from an early age to cross a
street by looking left right left. While this is a very simple task we do not
realized how programed this becomes into our head…Just wait until you are in a
foreign country and this simple principle is put to the test.
Sometimes in Africa the crosswalks are a little wishwashy or
a sidewalk suddenly disappears so you are forced to cross the street (may be
considered “j-walking”) This should be a simple mundane task that lets be
honest you have practiced since the early days of safety town. No not simple.
Not simple at all when you look left and do not see any cars coming, take a
step into the street… and then realize oncoming traffic is coming from the
RIGHT! This is has happened to more than one time. I am thankful for other
volunteers who know to look out for my beginning mistake! My advice to anyone
in Africa: (or other countries that drive on the left side of the road) USE
RIGHT LEFT RIGHT!!!
